The dining table, usually a place of ritual and routine, became something else.

Under a canopy of blankets, a new world was built — one that only exists in the quiet hours after the sun goes down. A flashlight became the only source of light. A wooden elephant, rendered in silhouette, stood watch. Finger shadows turned into deer along the fabric walls, moving in time with a father’s voice.

There was no need for the outside world.

Only the small, steady flicker of light held by determined hands.

When she eventually emerged, flashlight still glowing, she moved through the house as a guardian of the beam. A small explorer in a familiar place made strange by shadow — watching how light met walls, corners, and doorways, testing what could be revealed and what remained hidden.
